Even mild forms of scoliosis can make it difficult to do certain exercises. But just because you suffer from scoliosis curvature does not mean that should prevent you from exercising regularly. In this patient education article, we are going to offer up a few physical therapy exercises you can do if you suffer from scoliosis or kyphosis.
Side Stretch
- While standing or sitting with your back as straight as possible, reach both arms up to the ceiling.
- Grab your left wrist with your right hand and pull your left arm gently to the right.
- Hold for 5-10 seconds and release.
- Repeat with the other arm.
Reach Down
- Stand with your back against a wall.
- Lift your right hard toward the ceiling.
- At the same time, reach down to the ground with your left hand.
- Hold for 5-10 seconds and release.
- Repeat with the other side.
Hip Roll
- Lie down with your legs out in front of you and your arms stretched out to the sides.
- Raise both legs and bring your knees near your chest.
- Keeping your knees locked together, roll your legs in a clockwise motion for 5-10 seconds.
- Repeat in the counterclockwise direction.
Plank
- Bring yourself to a pushup position.
- Place your forearms on the floor and bring your hands together.
- Keeping your back as straight as possible, hold this position for 5-10 seconds and then release.
