Inspired Spine Hosts First Porcine Surgical Lab

Animal Model for Spinal Fusion Surgery Provides Cost Effective Teaching Method

BURNSVILLE, MN (2/19/2018) –- Inspired Spine recently hosted its first hands-on training of its Oblique Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion (OLLIF) spinal surgery on a porcine model. Attended by surgeons from around the world, the two-day educational event also included presentations on Inspired Spine’s minimally invasive surgery (MIS) procedures compared to the current standard of care, patient case reviews, and actual patient surgical observations.

“We are driving the agenda for advancing the standard of care for back surgery by establishing the very first animal model for minimally invasive spinal surgery training,” said Hamid Abbasi, M.D., Ph.D., FACS, FAANS, Chief Medical Officer. “The porcine model provides a cost-effective method to teach this technique on a global scale.”

For purposes of early stage surgical technique training, the porcine spine is an attractive alternative to a human spine due to its anatomical size and structure, mechanical characteristics, and cost. Inspired Spine recently acquired a property consisting of three buildings totaling 120,000 square feet in Burnsville, MN where it is building its Total Spinal Health and Technology Campus. Inspired Spine has already employed this new venue to scale its global training program, enabling more surgeons to learn its techniques. Based upon successful outcomes in over 600 patients, Inspired Spine’s goal is to make OLLIF the global standard of care for spinal fusion surgery.
