3 Yoga Poses to Relieve Stiff Joints
If you suffer from joint pain, you're not alone. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), joint pain is one of the most common types of pain in the United States, affecting more than 30% of adults.
While there are many treatments available to help relieve joint pain, yoga is a great option because it's low-impact and can be done at home with little equipment. Plus, regular movement has been shown to help reduce chronic pain symptoms and fix poor posture.
To get started, try these three yoga poses for joint pain relief:
Child's Pose
This pose is a great way to stretch the back and hips, which can help relieve joint pain in the lower body.
To do the child's pose, start on all fours with your knees hip-width apart and your hands shoulder-width apart. As you exhale, slowly sit back on your heels and stretch your arms out in front of you. Rest your forehead on the mat and hold the pose for at least 30 seconds.
Cat-cow Pose
This pose helps stretch the spine and release tension in the back. It's also beneficial for joint pain in the hips, knees, and shoulders.
To do a cat-cow pose, start on all fours with your hands shoulder-width apart and your knees hip-width apart. As you inhale, arch your back and look up toward the ceiling. As you exhale, round your back and tuck your chin to your chest. Repeat this pose for 10-20 breaths.
Downward Facing Dog
This pose is a great all-over stretch that can help relieve joint pain in the wrists, shoulders, back, and legs.
To do downward facing dog, start on all fours with your hands shoulder-width apart and your knees hip-width apart. As you exhale, lift your hips up and back to form an upside-down V shape. Keep your feet hip-width apart and your hands shoulder-width apart. Hold the pose for at least 30 seconds.

Regular practice of these yoga poses can help reduce joint pain and improve flexibility and range of motion. Remember to listen to your body and stop if you feel any pain. But, if you have chronic joint pain, you should consult with your doctor before practicing yoga to ensure you’re cleared for movement.
